About Kyoto Ninja Experiences
Kyoto’s standout ninja experience is a forging workshop, not a costume session. At a historic mansion a minute’s walk from Hieizanguchi Station, you change into samue — the traditional blacksmith’s attire — choose between three shuriken styles or a kunai, and hammer the glowing steel yourself as it comes out of an 800°C furnace. The blade is then shaped, engraved with a kanji character you pick, blackened against rust, and polished; the finished weapon goes home with you in a presentation box (checked luggage only on flights).
If you want training rather than craft, the alternatives cover it: a real ninja house in Arashiyama runs blowgun and shuriken practice with an English-speaking instructor and full costume rental, a tin-casting workshop welcomes children from age 5, and a Gion cafe packs shuriken, blowgun, and katana drills into one indoor session. Kyoto also makes a practical base for the historic ninja regions themselves — see our guide to Iga vs Koka ninja, both day trips from the city.

What Travelers Say
"My son and husband enjoyed the activity a lot. However there was some confusion about the pricing. We had paid for the kunai upgrade, however they did not have that on the booking on the studio’s end and my husband was told he had to pay for the upgrade which he did in cash. So I’m not sure if this was a getyourguide issue or a studio issue and am still trying to sort this out and get a refund for the difference which I’m hopeful will happen. Otherwise, the activity was as expected and the guides running it were knowledgeable, accommodating and helpful."
"Fun activity for parents and teens. The NIN studio team was helpful and friendly."
"My son and I really enjoyed the class. We each made a different weapon. The instructors explained the process well, and helped everyone through it at their own pace without impacting others. The complexity was spot on. Recommend."
